Daniel Rothman began his musical life as a woodwind player of the many types and styles heard around the New York metropolitan area and New Jersey Shore, where he studied with Val Krebs, a Pall Mall redolent gig-player that passed down to him advice from his teacher Stefan (Wolpe, as it turned out). At Juilliard Pre-College, Andrew Thomas introduced him to music then segregated by Uptown and Downtown scenes, finding his own way as an undergraduate student of Charles Wuorinen at Manhattan School of Music and a freelancing project assistant to John Cage. After studies with Morton Subotnick, Roger Reynolds, Zygmunt Krauze, and others at Yale University School of Music, and a short teaching stint at Montclair State College (NJ), he zipped off to Europe, working at Institut de recherche et de coordination acoustique/musique (Paris), ExperimentalStudio des SWF (Freiburg), and Dansk Institut fur Elektroakustisk Musik (Aarhus). He returned to NY, reconnected with friends and fellow musicians Tom Buckner, Robert Dick, Joe Kubera, Ted Mook, JD Parran, Ned Rothenberg, and Robert Ashley, among others, enrolled in and quit the DMA program at Columbia University, and moved to Los Angeles, where he founded Wires Center for New & Experimental Music, taught at CalArts, and established Los Angeles River Records.
Rothman's collaborators include artists Elliot Anderson and Jim Campbell (Cézanne's Doubt); Holly Tempo (Would Inglewood); Paul Tzanetopoulos (Sense Absence); writers Michael Lentz (ende gute. frage.), Andrea Loselle (Sigmaringen) and Yoko Tawada (Un coup de dés); and urban planner Deike Peters (The Ballona /Guashna Project).
Rothman's many commissions, fellowships and awards include Argosy Foundation, Bremen Radio, California Arts Council, Durfee Foundation (LA), French Ministry of Culture, Heinrich-Strobel-Stiftung (Freiburg), Leopold Schepp Foundation (NY), Musikprotokoll (Graz), National Endowment for the Arts (USA), New Jersey State Council on the Arts, ORF (Vienna and Graz), Partch Ensemble (LA), Phaedrus Foundation (NY), Piano Spheres (LA), Puffin Foundation (NJ), Rockefeller Foundation (NY), Schering Stiftung (Berlin), Südwestrundfunk New Jazz Meeting, Theatre Chamber Players of Kennedy Center, Westdeutscher Rundfunk, Zentrum für Kunst u.
